Email still has one of the best returns of any marketing channel, and automated emails are the easiest win of all. You write them once, and they go out at the right moment without you lifting a finger.
If you only set up three, make it these three.
1. The welcome email
When it sends: right after someone joins your list, makes a first purchase or fills in your form.
Welcome emails get opened more than almost any other email you'll send, because the person just heard of you and is paying attention. Use that moment well.
- Say thank you and confirm what they signed up for
- Tell them briefly who you are and what makes you different
- Give them one clear next step: book, shop or reply with a question
- Deliver anything you promised, like a discount code or guide
Keep it short and friendly. It should sound like you, not a corporation.
2. The follow-up email
When it sends: a few days after an enquiry that didn't turn into a booking, or after someone leaves items in their cart.
People get busy. Many enquiries go cold simply because nobody followed up. A short, helpful nudge brings a surprising number of them back.
- Remind them what they were looking at
- Answer the most common question or concern
- Make it easy to pick up where they left off
Two follow-ups spaced a few days apart is usually enough. Any more starts to feel pushy.
3. The review and return email
When it sends: a few days after a job is finished or an order arrives.
This email does two jobs. First, it asks happy customers for a review, which helps your Google ranking and your reputation. Second, it invites them back, with a reminder for their next appointment, a related service or a small thank-you offer.
For service businesses with natural cycles, like dental cleanings, HVAC tune-ups or hair appointments, add a reminder email timed to when they're due again.
What you need to get started
- An email tool such as Klaviyo, Mailchimp or the one built into your booking or store software
- A simple way to collect emails: a website form, booking system or checkout
- About an afternoon to write and test the three emails
Keep it legal
In the US, marketing emails need to follow the CAN-SPAM Act. In practice: include your business address, make unsubscribing easy and honor unsubscribe requests promptly, and only email people who gave you their address.
Set these three up once and they'll keep working for you every month.
