When someone searches "dentist near me" or "pizza in Brooklyn", Google shows a map with three businesses at the top, often called the local pack. Those three spots get a big share of the clicks and calls.
Here is a practical checklist to improve your chances of being one of them.
How Google picks local results
Google says local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your business matches the search
- Distance: how close you are to the person searching
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, including reviews and links
You can't change distance, but you can improve the other two.
Your Google Business Profile
- Claim and verify your profile
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add secondary ones
- Add every service you offer, with short descriptions
- Set accurate hours, including holiday hours
- Upload real photos of your work, team and location, and add new ones regularly
- Write a clear description of what you do and where
- Post updates or offers occasionally
- Answer questions in the Q&A section
Reviews
- Ask every happy customer, ideally right after the job
- Make it easy with a direct review link or QR code
- Reply to every review, good and bad, politely and quickly
- Never buy reviews or offer rewards for them. It breaks Google's rules
Your website
- Show your business name, address and phone number on every page, usually in the footer
- Create a separate page for each main service
- If you serve several towns, create helpful pages for the main ones, with real local detail rather than copy-paste text
- Embed a Google Map on your contact page
- Make sure the site is fast and works well on phones
- Add local business schema markup
Citations and consistency
- List your business on Yelp, Apple Maps, Bing Places and the main directories for your industry
- Use exactly the same name, address and phone number everywhere
- Fix old listings with outdated details
Local links and mentions
- Join your local chamber of commerce
- Sponsor a local team or event
- Partner with related local businesses
- Get featured in local news or community blogs
Be patient, and keep going
Local SEO builds over time. Most businesses see steady improvement over a few months of consistent work. The ones that win are usually the ones that keep collecting reviews and keep their profile fresh, long after competitors have stopped.
